My Maharashtra Birding Odyssey: Chasing the Saswad Rosefinch Vernal Parrot
My recent birding journey across Maharashtra, India, unfolded with a mix of high anticipation and the unpredictable whims of nature. Dividing my time between the rural tranquility of Saswad (specifically Gaurav Shelar’s farm near Pune, Panjare) and the coastal allure of Panvel, my primary targets included the stunning Saswad Rosefinch Vernal Parrot complex, along with the elusive Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher. This trip, spanning late August and early September, was a testament to the thrill of the chase, the invaluable role of local guides, and the humbling lessons learned when plans go awry.
Saswad: Where the Saswad Rosefinch Vernal Parrot Took Center Stage
My adventure kicked off with a red-eye flight from Kolkata to Pune. A slightly delayed landing didn’t dampen my spirits, and I arrived at Gaurav Shelar’s farm by 7:15 AM. Gaurav, my host for the Saswad leg, is an absolute gem. Having stayed with him last year, I knew I was in for a treat. His pre-trip updates, confirming the daily visits of Rose Finches, had me buzzing with excitement. His family’s hospitality, including the “nice, and simple” home-cooked meals (think roti, daal, and vegetable curry), added a wonderful comfort to my Rs 1000/day stay, with an additional Rs 1000 covering two days of delicious food.
The very first morning in Saswad was incredibly rewarding. By 8 AM, I had secured a great shot of the vibrant green Vernal Hanging Parrot, its orange beak and distinct red rump shining. Shortly after, the beautiful crimson male Common Rosefinch made an appearance, actively feeding on millet stalks. These birds are incredibly shy, a lesson I quickly learned. Photographing them, especially capturing them on video, proved to be quite a challenge unless they were deeply engrossed in feeding. I managed some lovely snapshots by camouflaging myself below a small tree, enduring the harsh afternoon light. Witnessing a flock of Rose Finches take flight was a spectacular moment, though I was gutted not to have it on video.
My second day reiterated these challenges. Despite an early start, the harsh light returned by 8 AM. More crucially, over 25 people had gathered by 8:30 AM, making bird activity incredibly low. This taught me a valuable lesson: weekdays are often better for birding, as crowds on weekends can disturb the birds. Common Rosefinches, in particular, are extremely wary; the slightest movement of a lens or a person sends them soaring. Frequent power cuts also made things a bit difficult, but such is the reality of remote locations.
Despite the photographic hurdles, these crowded moments were fantastic for networking. I met many fellow enthusiasts, exchanging tips and stories. Practical advice for anyone visiting: always carry extra batteries, memory cards, a power bank, sunscreen, and plenty of water. The heat in Maharashtra can be unforgiving!
Beyond the Saswad Rosefinch Vernal Parrot: Panvel & Kingfisher Dreams
After a scenic drive and a delightful dinner with a friend in Pune, I arrived in Panvel, ready for my next target: the stunning Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher. Gaurav had kindly connected me with Samadhan Pawar, who arranged my stay in a hotel (Rs 1500) and access to a dedicated kingfisher hide (Rs 3000). I was buzzing with anticipation for the following morning’s session.
However, nature, as it often does, had other plans. The next morning brought torrential rain, forcing the cancellation of my kingfisher hide session. It was a proper kick in the b**t, a stark reminder that even the most meticulously planned trips can be at the mercy of the elements. While disappointing, it’s part of the wild birding experience.
Though I missed the kingfisher, the trip was still incredibly fulfilling. I managed to capture a striking image of a male Purple Sunbird in its vibrant eclipse plumage, dark on top and bright yellow below, a beautiful bonus amidst the lush foliage of Panjare. My Maharashtra birding journey, despite its minor setbacks, was a rich tapestry of vibrant sightings, invaluable lessons, and the warm hospitality of dedicated local guides like Gaurav and Samadhan. It’s these unpredictable moments that make every birding adventure truly unique.

My Maharashtra Birding Adventure!
Hello fellow nature lovers! I recently went on an exciting birding trip to Maharashtra, India, from late August to early September. I visited two wonderful spots: Saswad and Panvel. Get ready to hear about chasing colorful birds, some tricky weather, and important lessons I learned along the way!
Saswad: Home of Finches and Parrots
My first stop was Saswad, near Pune. I stayed at Gaurav Shelar’s farm, a comfortable place where I felt right at home. Gaurav is an amazing host, and his parents cooked delicious, simple meals for me. I paid Rs 1000 per day for my stay and Rs 1000 for two days of their lovely food.
I was really hoping to see the stunning Rose Finch and the vibrant Vernal Hanging Parrot. And guess what? On my very first morning, I spotted both! The Vernal Hanging Parrot, with its bright green feathers and red rump, was a delight. The Common Rosefinch, a beautiful crimson bird, was a bit shy. They don’t like being seen, often hiding in trees before coming down to eat. I learned that getting a photo of them feeding is a real challenge!
The weather was super hot, and the bright sun made it hard to take pictures. Weekends also brought lots of other birdwatchers, making the birds even shyer. It taught me to always bring extra batteries and water! One cool moment was seeing a whole flock of Rose Finches fly away, even though I couldn’t get it on video.
Panvel: The Kingfisher Hunt
After Saswad, I headed to Panvel. Here, my goal was to see the famous Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher from a special hide. Samadhan Pawar, who Gaurav connected me with, arranged my hotel (Rs 1500) and hide access (Rs 3000). I was so excited!
But sometimes, nature has other plans. The next morning, it rained so, so heavily! My kingfisher session had to be cancelled. It was a bit disappointing, but it’s part of the adventure. Even though I didn’t see the kingfisher, it was a memorable trip full of beautiful birds like the Purple Sunbird and great new friends!
I saw the vibrant male Purple Sunbird, with its dark top and bright yellow tummy, perched among green leaves. It was a lovely surprise!
