Guess what? I went on an exciting bird adventure in Rajarhat, Kolkata! My friend Siddharth and I woke up super early to find and photograph a tiny, bright red bird called the Red Munia. It was a special Red Munia Rajarhat Birding trip!
Our Early Morning Red Munia Rajarhat Birding Quest
We got up before the sun and went to a beautiful spot with tall, white kash flowers. Siddharth, my friend, helped us find the best places. We saw colorful Indian Rollers eating bugs!

We also spotted a watchful Bengal Bushlark, blending in with the muddy ground. Finding the tiny red birds was tricky at first. But then, one little brave red bird with white spots popped out, and I got a photo!
It was an amazing moment to see it perched on a blade of grass. We learned to keep our distance, so we don’t scare them away!

An Early Start for Our Red Munia Rajarhat Birding Adventure
The alarm clock barely knew what hit it when I hopped into an Uber at 4:40 am, heading to Salt Lake Tank 4 to meet my good friend, Siddharth Roychowdhury, at 5 am. Siddharth’s local insights, gleaned from fellow Kolkata birders, were our roadmap. We reached our spot in the Bengal Silicon Valley by 5:25 am, aiming to be back home by 10 am for work. This time pressure certainly added a thrill! The area, though small, was stunning with its beautiful white kash flowers
and alive with cheerful chirping, though we noted some dirty areas.Unexpected Encounters During Our Red Munia Rajarhat Birding Trip
Initially, I wasn’t too hopeful about spotting the Red Munia, but we glimpsed a couple, too quick for a photo. As the sun rose, its soft light was perfect. I managed a fantastic shot of a Bengal Bushlark, its streaked brown plumage blending perfectly as it stood watchful.
We also saw another busy foraging.
Later, with harsher light, we still spotted a female Asian Koel, perfectly camouflaged amidst lush green foliage with its striking barred plumage.
The Elusive Red Munia: A Triumph for Red Munia Rajarhat Birding!
A highlight was catching an Indian Roller feeding, holding an insect in its beak. These birds are fascinating predators. We saw a pair, and I captured one perched confidently on a branch.
However, a moment where someone got too close, preventing feeding and causing a bird to fly away, was a stark reminder: keep a respectful distance from wildlife.Right after, our luck changed! Four or five Red Munias flew in, keeping to deep grassland. Their vibrant breeding plumage, a mix of bright red with white spots, was stunning.
We even spotted a dashing male Red Avadavat in its striking breeding plumage amidst lush green foliage.
As more people arrived, it became harder for the Munias to come out, reinforcing the importance of being early and giving birds space. But one brave Red Munia finally emerged for a fraction of a second, perching on a slender green stem! I captured an amazing photograph!
It was truly a memorable moment, seeing its calm vigilance up close. This Red Munia Rajarhat Birding trip, greatly aided by Siddharth’s invaluable insights and passion, truly reinforced the beauty of nature and ethical birding. We made it back home for office, accomplished!
